PSP offers a unique mix of didactic and experiential courses which provide the student with an opportunity to learn about the modern analytic approach to treatment and are also designed to facilitate the development of emotional flexibility and resilience among the participants:

Transference and Resistance Workshops I - VII

Primary emphasis is placed on the experiential understanding of transference and resistance as they occur among class participants. In addition, participants become acquainted with psychoanalytic theories of transference and resistance, especially the modern analytic understanding of narcissistic transference frequently encountered in patients and therapists. These workshops also work on resolving resistances to cooperative functioning with fellow students and faculty, and resistances to speaking spontaneously in professional situations.

Psychoanalytic Theory

Modern psychoanalysis embraces all schools of thought which illuminate the human condition. Therefore, this group of courses acquaints students with classic Freudian psychoanalytic theory as well as post-Freudian and contemporary theories of human maturation and development, psychic functioning and treatment. PSP strongly endorses the notion that professional practice is enhanced and deepened by a familiarity with varied perspectives and orientations. Courses in this group generally include:

  • Human Maturation and Development I - II
  • Basic Writings of Freud
  • Freud’s Case Studies and Technical Papers
  • Basic Theory I - II
  • Sex, Aggression and Primary Process
  • Ego Psychology and Object Relations Theory
  • Evolution of Psychoanalytic Technique
  • Contemporary Developments in Psychoanalysis
  • Clinical Perspectives of Freud's Social Thought and Activism
  • Understanding Research and Ethics

Treatment Theory and Practice

PSP focuses on modern analytic treatment through a coordinated series of theory courses alternating with case presentation seminars in which students and faculty present detailed case material. The goal is to illuminate and understand the patient - analyst interaction in order to fashion appropriate interventions for varying transferences - countertransferences and resistances as they appear in the treatment situation.
